Marta Arakelyan
Embroiderer
Marta was born and raised in Artsakh. Following the events of September 2023, she moved to Yerevan, bringing with her cherished memories of her homeland and the embroidery traditions passed down through her family.
Marta is one of four sisters. The skill of embroidery was passed down in their family from grandmother to mother, and then to daughters. Faced with the challenges of starting a new life, Marta and her sister decided to build a business of their own, with the hope of preserving Armenian culture and keeping the spirit of Artsakh alive.
There is one piece that holds a particularly special place in Marta’s heart: her grandmother’s unfinished carpet, embroidered using the cross-stitch technique. For years, Marta wondered why her grandmother, and later her mother, had left it unfinished. It was only when she began embroidering herself that she realized how much emotion, patience, and dedication goes into each piece. She began to see her grandmother’s unfinished work in a different light, and it remains especially dear to her today.
This is how “L’esprit de l’Artsakh” was born, a brand whose creations feature traditional Armenian patterns and cultural symbols. Through her work, Marta hopes to preserve this cultural heritage, inspiring young people in particular to discover and appreciate their roots and pass this heritage on to future generations.
